American rapper Cameron Jibril Thomaz, better known by his stage name Wiz Khalifa, faced legal issues in Romania related to illegal drug use. Following the incident over the weekend, Wiz Khalifa issued an apology to his fans on social media.
The Romanian anti-organized crime prosecutors, DIICOT, released a statement saying, “During a performance at a music festival in the Costinești resort, Constanța county, [Khalifa] was found with over 18 grams of cannabis (a controlled substance) and consumed another amount of cannabis onstage in the form of a handmade cigarette.”
The statement also highlighted, “We want to emphasize that during the entire legal process, the individuals under investigation are entitled to the procedural rights and protections outlined in the Criminal Procedure Code, and are presumed innocent until proven guilty.”
In Romania, recreational use of cannabis is prohibited. Wiz Khalifa was in the country for his performance at the Beach! Please festival. A video from the event later surfaced online, showing the musician being apprehended by authorities. Although he was initially detained for illegal drug possession, he was later released after a thorough interrogation about the incident.
In response, Wiz Khalifa took to X (formerly Twitter) to address his fans, saying, “Last night’s show was incredible. I didn’t intend to disrespect Romania by smoking on stage. The audience was very respectful and allowed me to perform. I’ll definitely return, but I won’t be lighting up next time.”
Wiz Khalifa has frequently made headlines for his open use of cannabis in both his personal and professional life. Earlier in 2024, he garnered media attention when he revealed on the Call Her Daddy Podcast that he attended his son’s school event while under the influence of cannabis.
